Started out with the scheduled short run…. But since the snow outside had me in on the Dreadmill, I thought I’d push it a little and do the last 1.5 miles as sprints on hills. I was sweaaaaa-teeeee!! (But it felt great!)
Today I zipped off to Corpus Christi Texas ~ and it’s WARM! Finally! Yeah!

I think I’m allergic to the nuclear grade cleaners they use in hotels & on airplanes. Without fail, I get sick after a long flight & stay in an airtight hotel. Sinuses go berzerk. This time they filled my lungs with the croup - which knocked me out for the entire day yesterday. What a pain!
So, after loading up on who-knows-what kind of antihistamines and cough suppressants, (oh, happy day of balloon head!), and a Dimetapp-induced sleep, I felt like I could tackle a quick jaunt on St. Burke-Gilman today……. nothing to write home about……..burning lungs……….but the legs felt decent. That’s what 2 days off will do for ya!
So many people have asked me if I’m stocking up on Airborne. I’m on the fence about whether I think this stuff works……. but enough people have mentioned it that I’ll give it a shot. I bought the plenty-pack at Costco. We’ll see.
I just want to be healthy for the Vancouver 1/2…………….

Long live the VENDING MACHINE!! I was flying home last night with the obligatory layover in Minneapolis. As I was sauntering to my next gate (I actually had time to saunter! Shock! Gasp*) - I passed what looked like an ordinary vending machine.
But noooooooooo. This was no ordinary vending machine. This was a vending machine for iPods. And iPod accessories. And iPod docking stations with speakers. And a headphone for every taste.
AND… digital cameras. And video recorders. And (for the runners out there!) a GARMIN 205!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, right there in the hallway between F Gates and G Gates you can slide your credit card and buy yourself a GARMIN and an iPod Video…..and some killer speakers……and a $300 camera to record your trip!
PLUS…….. about 100 yards down the hallway, there was another vending machine. This one was full of the “ProActiv” skin care products!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How handy! Now you can look good in all the pictures!!!
Wow. What next!?

Still in Florida…..I was sooo tired after work today but took advantage of my last night at the beach. I did a fast run as the sun was setting. It was a clear day so I could see beach for miles.
Florida Irony: Today I also stopped at the grocery store to pick up snacks. How is it that I’m in Florida, home of the Florida Orange………. but the only oranges I could find were from CALIFORNIA. This makes no sense to me.
Oh well……back to the west coast tomorrow night.

I coined this phrase in 2006 when I was speaking at a conference in Italy. Technically I was ‘working’ ~ but in a lovely foreign land that I’d never been to before! I added a healthy dose of seeing the sights and experiencing new places on the planet. I love to ‘tour’ the places I go for work, and if it’s a new or especially curious place, I’ll arrive early or stay a few days to suss it out! It makes ‘business travel’ soooooo fun!!
This week I am practicing ‘occupational tourism’ on the Atlantic Ocean beaches of Mayport, Florida! (Hello from Florida!) I’ve never understood the allure of Florida ~ until today! I went for a run on the beach….and there was NO ONE in sight! (Okay, a few other locals out for a run or walk with their dog, but no tourists to speak of!) You see, it’s FREEEEEZING here this week! (Apparently Florida DOES get winter!) So the beach was all fogged in with a soupy mist, the air was crisp, and the waves were big. It almost looked like the best blustery days off the coast of southwest Washington or Oregon. Beautiful. And, it was sooooooo quiet. I only ran for 30 minutes, but then I took my shoes and socks off and just walked in the water. It was cold, but lovely!!! (I did see a few ladies in anorak jackets with the hoods pulled up. They looked at me in my running t-shirt & shorts- with my shoes in my hands, walking through the water- as if I had a few heads. Ha!)
I’ve only been to these beaches when it’s been summer and ’spring-break’……read: 10bazillion people cramming every inch on the sand and every cafe on the boardwalk. Ob-nox-ious.
But today, it was peaceful. And even with the fog and the mist and the ‘cold’, I finally understand what Florida has to offer.
Thanks, Florida! And thanks Tax Man for letting me write it off!

Long run today along the Burke-Gilman.. The beasties were out in full force! We saw the majestic (Bald Eagles), the peaceful (Giant Blue Herons), the usual (Squirrels), and the super-cute (a Family of Otters swimming in the slough).
Ahhhh, a touch of Mother Nature.

Finished off the week with a little elliptical. I can sure tell when it’s not tri season and all I’m doing is running (and a little strength). My joints hurt. I’m tired.
It’s a sure-fire sign it’s time to get back on the bike & in the pool. Yay for spring!

I sucked it up and hit the dreadmill this morning. Now it’s off to work. I’m taking an extended lunch break for a treat! (Who am I kidding? I work for myself. I take extended lunch breaks whenever I feel like it! Ha!) Today however, the lunch break will be to a pool in Bellevue where I’ll be taking my god-daughter to mom-n-me swim lessons! (Or in this case, auntie-n-me!) She’s 3 months old. Today is the first day for ‘underwater’! Wooooooo! What a hoot!
…It’s the little things, isn’t it?

Over the last year I’ve been inspired by a person at my gym. I first noticed him early last year, around the same time I started training for Ironman… He was a big guy in a baggy t-shirt. I noticed him because he was there every morning, working harder than most. Every. Day.
Once the summer hit I was training outside and didn’t get to the gym much. After my race, I started to hit the gym again…. and was positively amazed by my work-ethic gym-mate. He was transformed. He was…thin, fit, and healthy! The ONLY way I recognized him was by his very handsome and distinctive eyes. Everything else was different. In the early months, I was inspired by this person’s commitment to sweat ~ but clearly he was doing more to take control of his body and his health than I ever knew. From afar, I was even MORE inspired by him. I found myself sharing about his weight-loss and fitness accomplishments to my husband and friends ~ and hadn’t ever even talked to the guy. In my house, he became known as the ‘Amazing Guy at My Gym’…….
Fast forward to yesterday. I finally learned his name. Amazing Guy at My Gym is actually Peter Engvall. There he was…..on Oprah. Bob Greene (and Oprah) were launching a new year of ‘Your Best Life’ programs… and Peter was there to demonstrate that with will, with fitness information, with a loving support system (his family!), and with lots and lots of sweat, it IS possible to transform ourselves and our lives. A year ago, he saw a similar episode of Oprah and was inspired to take the program on. In the last year Peter-Amazing-Guy has lost 140lbs. When I saw him on TV, I jumped up & yelled: THAT’S the AMAZING GUY AT OUR GYM!!!!!!!!!! The ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of him playing with his kids made me want to cry.
So, Peter, if you’re reading this ~ THANK YOU. Thank you for your spirit. Even if you didn’t know it, it was contagious! Thank you for inspiring me to get up every morning. Thank you for squashing my excuses and my urge to stay at home. Thank you for sharing your story and your success. Thank you for your commitment to yourself and your family ~ and, thank you for BEING amazing. I am honored to have learned from you and sweat beside you. Please know how much of of a difference you have made.
Peter’s not famous because he meant to be. He’s not even famous because he was on Oprah. He’s famous because he made a difference for me (and now for millions of others!) - and may not even know it. I hope to have an opportunity to tell him in person.
It’s a great reminder that ~ You never know when you’re making a memory.
~S

My bod’s got some aches from yesterday’s run so I did a 30 minute warm up - and stretched for another 30! Stretching is such a luxury! One of the ‘wish list’ items for my fitness lifetime is to be able to touch my nose to my knees. Ha ha haaaaaaa! Currently my nose is about 3 feet away.
A girl can dream……………….
