Bike to Run practice

Great ride today!   Today’s workout was to introduce the group to a little ‘road’ (read: build riding skills where there’s a lot going on around you) - and then begin working bike to run.  The Y gang did great!

It’s not called “Frizbee Golf”

While we finished up the 18th hole at the MLT Frisbee Golf course we ran into a couple of ‘regulars’.   It was our first time playing so we were joking about calling us when they find the ($10!) frisbees we lost in the jungle.   They promptly corrected us about the name - It is “Disc Golf”…………

 Got it!

(By the way, it’s a hoot!  Apparently there is a whole subculture of Disc Golfers with tournaments, ladies nights, championships, and websites with ratings.)  Hilarious!

MLT route - Love those hills

I might be sick. In the last few weeks I’ve decided that I love running hills. I can actually pass people on hills. This is nuts. Can’t pass ‘em to save my life on the flats…… but hills? I’m your girl.

Perhaps all those sprints on the dreadmill are paying off? Hmmm………….

Or, perhaps I need some therapy?

Riding in the rain…NOT!

Guilty as charged:  I am a fair-weather rider.  Unless I have a race coming up (soon!), I see no point in being miserable while riding in the rain.   Running, no problem.  Riding, not so much.

Inside ride today.  Yay!

Coffee with the dolphins in the morning

And dinner with the eels over sunset……  not the eels you eat either.  The eels that hang out in the lava pools near our condo.     It’s been a great day to end our vaca.   The run this morning was a huuuuge bust - but no worries.    A crappola run here is better than a mediocre run anywhere else.   :-)

We visited our new friend Greg to buy more coffee for the trip home.   It’s been a great time and I am excited about coming back.

Mahalo Hawai’i.

Slow Churn on Ali’i Drive

Yowza… sloowwww and heavy run this morning.  I’m dehydrated.  I think ‘lounging’ is also slowing me down.  While I’m a huge fan of recreation (read: re-creation), slowing down, soaking up the spirit of the islands, reading books from cover-to-cover on the beach……  I wonder if it’s causing my back to stiffen up?  Probably.

It may be snorkeling too.  The first few days back in the fins works muscles in a different way.

Ahhhhhhh, the perils of paradise.   Hee hee!

Snorkeling with the Turtles

Does snorkeling count on my pie chart?  Would that be ‘general cardio’?  Heh, heh.

Mr. Turtle popped out while we were snorkeling today.   I have yet to figure out how to load pictures on this system……. maybe I’ll work on that tonight.    Oohhh, we stopped at the out-of-the-way Macadamia Nut Factory after to pick up some UN-FREAKIN-BELIEVABLE milk chocolate bark with mac nuts and fresh, toasted coconut.   There IS a God.    This stuff makes the cheap, boxed choc-covered mac nuts taste like wax.   Yummmmmmmmm……………… (Good thing we did a hard run this morning.  Saw some kids at ’swim practice’ at the Ironman swim site.  Inspired us to go down tomorrow morning for a little swim of our own.)

And, the ladies were getting their Ukelele lessons on our lanai when we got home.   It’s a group of retirees who live here and take lessons…….   We opened our glass door to listen in.  They actually sound good!

Aloha!

Channeling my Inner Kid

Kid… as in, Baby Goat.

Yesterday, we decided to ‘hike in’ to a very cool spot with black sand, obscene amounts of turtles, killer snorkeling, and a ‘Queen’s Bath’ (a freshwater pool in a lava tube where you can swim in the tube from ’skylight’ to ’skylight’.)   It is only about 1 mile from the road, but because it’s not ‘tourist friendly’ (read: paved roads with bathrooms & an ice cream hut), it is often deserted!

However, isn’t it amazing how one teeny little turn can change plans all together?   The guide book said to ‘park’ on the side of the road at mile marker 88, just at the end of the guard rail.   (Should I tell you we’ve done this ‘adventure’ at least 3 times before……?)  Anyhoodles, we went ‘right’ instead of left on the lava trail.   This landed us smack dab in the middle of the lava fields, up and over the craggy, sharp rock.  (After all, lava is a form of glass.)   We COULD have turned around and gone back to the start….. but, nahhhhh!   The ocean is ‘right there’.  As long as we’re heading in that direction, we’re good!   A ‘hike’ that should have taken MAYYYBE 15 minutes, ended up taking us 40 minutes.   We had to navigate sharp, pointy rocks, slippery shale, hot sun beating down, AND a small dry forest that didn’t have a ‘trail’ to speak of.

We decided we were channeling our ‘Inner Kid’ because a) we were just out there for an adventure, following our noses, and seeing how much fun we could have with it… and b) the area has a herd of ‘wild goats’ which can navigate the uneven and wobbly terrain with ease.   We came across a family of these goats - who looked at us like we were whacked.

We finally made it to the ocean with all our gear…….   however, the surf had picked up wildly so the only water we dipped in was the Queen’s Bath.  It was stokin’ hot so the cool water was welcomed!!

Aloha!
