Yoga should be called Yoda

… Yoda should be called Yoda……for all the thinking, reflection and insights I get while I’m there……..

Taming the Downward Dog - (New Years Eve Part I)

Started the day with a yummy sleep in, thinking I could always hit the 9:30 hot yoga class.   I showed up but to my surprise, the 9:30 class today was a POWER YOGA class.   YOWZA!!  It was hard…in that great hard sort of way!!  Sweat was dripping off my nose.   Vidal (yoga guru) made it fun and acceptable that I was completely off base on most of the moves…so while it was challenging, it was a delightful experience - and a suprising way to end my year.

Happy New Year!!

Sending you good juju!

It’s a good day. I know this because a record was set this morning. TEN people came to the new 6am hot yoga class. This is the most ever. This must mean that today is about abundance and good energy. So… in that spirit, I am sending you all good juju for the day. Let me know how it goes! :-)

Outliving my newbie-ness

There are several good things about signing up for something - and sticking with it.

The obvious good thing is that…eventually… you get better at whatever it is you’re doing. My new thing has been hot yoga. (Or, for that matter, yoga of any temperature.) At first I was wobbly (okay, more wobbly than I am now.) And I could not touch my toes. Today I noticed that I’m much more solid in the postures (which, according to thousands of years of yoga wisdom, is benefiting me and my organs in so many ways). Plus, it must mean that I’m getting stronger. I notice that I’m also a little more bendy. I’m not quite gumby yet, but I can see my toes over my head in foot-up-bend-back-arm-out-front-standing-on-one-leg pose. (I’m sure the official name of the pose is something close to that.) ;-)

Another benefit of sticking to something is that … eventually…. you’re no longer the ‘newbie’. Sure I might still be green in my practice, but there have been new people signing up that are starting where I did. There’s something satisfying about knowing that I no longer need so much ‘individual’ attention to my body posture and where my hips are placed. Others need the help from Vidal now, and I can practice my poses in peace.

To all newbies - No worries!! I promise, IT GETS BETTER! :-)

Ideas for “Experience” gifts??

Hey out there in Active Land… What ideas do you have for “experience gifts” to give people of all ages, prices and levels of activity?? I’m looking for ideas to reduce my ‘consumerism’ and increase my ‘active-ism’ in the spirit of giving this season.

ALL ideas are welcome!! They don’t have to be ideas geared toward ‘fitness’ or physical activity…

Merry! Merry!

The early gumby-wanna-be gets the worm…

There were only 2 of us at the 6am hot yoga class on Monday.   Though it required getting up at 5am, it was a sweet deal.   Being a newbie to hot yoga (or yoga of any temperature), I come by my gumby green honestly.    Vidal (the studio owner) was able to give us a tonne of one:one attention to ensure we were doing the postures correctly.   It was an eye-opener and showed me where I was cheating my way out of too many benefits to name.   Plus, Vidal would provide a little extra pressure into some of the poses which made the stretch just that much more…meaningful.

So, Shhhhh!  Keep the secret!   Go on and fill the later classes, but leave that early class for me!   :-)     I will touch my nose to my knees before you know it.

Hot Yoga lessons - learned the hard way

Lesson #1:   Go in with an empty stomach or you will empty your stomach.   Last week I felt a little light headed and hungry during the class…  so this week I decided to have a small piece of toast with a thin layer of peanut butter and sliced 1/2 banana about an hour before class.    BAD IDEA.   I thought I was going to yak the whole time.   For me, an empty stomach is the only way I’m doing HY in the future.

Lesson #2:  Looking cool is not a priority.   I have an older yoga mat that is made of thicker foam.  The heat made the mat a little stretchy plus, everyone else had a ‘cool kid’ yoga mat, the kind that are thin and sticky.    I didn’t bring my old (uncool) mat today because I knew that with my new-customer package I would get a new (and fancy!) cool one like everyone else.  I was so excited because I knew I’d even get to pick out the color!  (Purple, of course.)   HOWEVER… upon reflection, my knees and hip-bones were KILLING me on several of the floor poses.  My old and clunky mat provided much more cushion and made the experience more pleasant.   Though I have the new-fancy-mat, I think I’ll be going back to old faithful for my ‘unlimited’ classes over the holidays!

Gumby wanna be, out.
